SALARY:£28,545 - £31,717 depending on experience

We are looking for an experienced, degree-qualified, Analytical Scientist with expertise in analytical techniques including GC-MS (preferably including GC TOF) and HPLC to join our team in Surface engineering (SE). The role will be to support a fast-paced project by developing analytical methods, troubleshooting issues and performing VOC measurement analyses.

The role is ideally suited to an enthusiastic individual who has good theoretical and applied knowledge of analytical science. A proven track record in the application of technical expertise in the development of methodologies is essential, as well as evidence of good decision-making and of delivering effectively to deadlines. You should be able to demonstrate that you can work on your own initiative and as part of a team.


  • Work with the project team, work-stream leader and external collaborators to build and validate analytical methodologies and workflow, with specific emphasis on VOC analysis

  • Develop appropriate work programme and deliver agreed plan within timescale and budget

  • Provide guidance and technical training in analytical techniques and methodologies where required

  • Fully document work in presentations and reports

  • Interpret the outcomes and make recommendations.


  • Minimum BSc in a relevant science area (Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry), and/or

relevant experience in the fields of analytical measurement.

  • Expertise in GC/MS, GC TOF, HPLC method development, analysis and data interpretation.

  • Good record of dealing with complex data sets and proficiency is the use of statistical data packages and data management systems.

  • Experience of preparing safety documentation (E.g. CoSHH) Understanding and application of relevant Safety and best practice guidelines in the use of new and existing instrumentation e.g. Risk assessments, COSHH, ergonomics.

  • Proven science and technology experience in analysis of VOCs (malodour and fragrances) desirable

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
