DNV GL Control Algorithm Design Engineer in Bristol, United Kingdom
The DNV GL control engineering team is looking for a control algorithm design engineer to support the development of existing in-house design tools into a design toolbox to allow rapid prototyping and tuning of control algorithms for wind turbines. A significant part of the daily work will involve Matlab and/or Python programming and the use of Bladed (DNV GL’s wind turbine modelling tool renowned as the industry leading device modelling tool). The successful candidate will have the opportunity of working within a team widely regarded as the premier control algorithm design team for wind and tidal turbines, having developed control algorithms for more different turbines than any other organisation in the world and maintaining strong technical leadership of the industry. It is expected that the candidate will work under the supervision of senior staff. The role is based in our Bristol office, for a fixed term contract of 6 months with possibility of renewal.
The DNV GL control engineering team comprises of 12 staff with skills spanning algorithm design, control system implementation, control system testing and long term development of control technology for renewable energy. The majority of DNV GL control system works are with new or established wind turbine manufacturers sometimes requiring algorithm design only and sometimes algorithm design, software and commissioning support. DNV GL is also involved with control algorithm projects for novel wind and marine technologies, and UK & European Community research projects.
The control team works within DNV GL’s 40+ Turbine Engineering Support (TES) Department and almost all projects include control staff working closely with turbine modelling, analysis and structural design specialists. Mastery of the maths and control design methodologies is vital but no less so than an understanding of the plant that is being controlled.
Key aspects of the work include:
Creation of scripts and tools mainly in Matlab and Python to improve in-house control design tools to achieve an internal customised design toolbox,
Tuning of power production control loops for variable speed pitch regulated wind turbines,
Set-up, run & analyse aeroelastic simulations in Bladed,
Providing correspondence and documentation sufficient to explain all aspects of the design work.
Control algorithm development at DNV GL uses predominantly a combination of in-house tools, Matlab and Microsoft C/C++ development tools.
Technical / Professional Expertise and Qualifications:
Minimum of upper second class engineering, physics or similar numerate subject.
Expert user of Matlab.
Knowledge of classical control theory and transfer function analysis.
Knowledge of linear systems and frequency domain analysis.
An ability to assimilate and understand complex mechanical and electrical system behaviour.
Previous experience in the use of Bladed and Matlab Control Toolbox
Confidence with C and C++ languages would be an advantage
Background in modelling and control of wind turbines is preferred.
Knowledge of modern control theory and state space methods
Knowledge of Python & development of graphical user interface.

Ability to write and compose clear and accurate reports in English.
Well-developed critical/analytical and decision making ability.
