The position sits within Innovative Medicines (IMED) and is part of the Facilities Management (FM) department, delivering SHE advice to all departments located within The Cambridge Campus (9 interims sites and New R&D Headquarters Building) and also includes Luton and London Board space. Our sites are a combination of Laboratory and Office accommodation with a combined population of approx. 2000 people.


You will be an active member of the Cambridge FM Leadership Team contributing to ensuring the overall delivery of the FM Strategy. Leading, developing and executing the SHE strategy for sites within scope. Strategy includes Health and Wellbeing.

Leading the Operational Readiness Project to ensure SHE is ready for New Site occupation to ensure a simple and effective SHE Management System which enables a safe, sustainable, productive Cambridge science community from Day 1 onwards.

You will lead, develop and execute the SHE Management system for sites within scope. Define and agree the SHE principles for shared facilities in Cambridge and define the SHE Operating model for delivering SHE support in New Headquarters and a future Cambridge operating model.

Developing and leading a team to provide SHE governance, advice and support to all sites within scope. Providing knowledge & capability to obtain and assure licences/permits to operate and adherence to AZ SHE policies and procedures and provide local delivery of Global SHE standards and principles.

Leading the interface with relevant external regulatory bodies to ensure AZ Licence to Operate and provide subject matter expertise to New R&D Headquarters and the transition of operations to the new site. You will also lead, develop and deliver new initiatives and improvement programmes in SHE and FM.

Essential Skills:

  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) qualified health and safety professional.

  • Degree qualified in a science, engineering or manufacturing discipline or equivalent

  • Solid experience in Safety, Health or Environment, at leadership / management level.

  • Preferred demonstrable experience in a pharmaceutical / biotechnology environment and in developing safe working processes.

  • Familiarity with laboratory processes and ability to communicate in depth with scientists.

  • Excellent communication skills and be comfortable supporting stakeholders at all levels.

  • Good technical and IT skills to exploit new technologies.

  • Ability to coach, mentor and manage teams

  • Great customer and supplier relationship management.

  • An understanding and experience of leading Change Projects and delivering them to time, quality and budget.

  • A dynamic approach and comfortable working in an agile environment.

  • Comfortable making decisions sometimes with limited information.

  • Multi-site, multi team experience.

  • Good understanding and approach to risk management.

  • Be used to dealing effectively with multiple concurrent challenges on multiple sites
