The IMED Oncology has the accountability for all activities in small molecule oncology research up to the start of Phase III clinical studies. Within Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED), leadership of projects occurs within the Oncology Projects Group with the head of this group reporting to the head of IMED Oncology. Project Leader/Senior Project Leader has the accountability for the strategy and execution of projects and lead cross-functional teams to deliver these objectives.
As the Project Leader/Senior Project Leader, you will lead the development and execution of the product strategy for one or more projects (which may be either clinical or pre-clinical). You will develop a range of strategic and tactical options, secure governance approval for the projects and then take accountability for execution, monitoring and reporting of progress / issues. You will be responsible for articulating the project goals, strategy and the underlying science and clinical need to internal and external audiences with clarity and credibility.
You will work in a highly effective way with internal project, scientific and clinical leaders and external opinion leaders to develop integrated plans which can be delivered across functions. You must be able to demonstrate effective delivery through both internal groups or through external collaborative studies.
You will also be expected to demonstrate visible leadership within the Oncology community and support the broader goals of IMED Oncology. Development of clinical and non-clinical staff will be expected..
You will be a strong leader who can demonstrate strategic thinking, ability to work collaboratively and act decisively – with a blend of late stage drug development experience coupled with a strong oncology background. This role will be based at our Cambridge research site.
Lead projects from Lead Optimisation Investment Decision to PoP/PoC:
Ensuring alignment with the project strategy to the disease area strategy.
Interfacing and positioning of project within the broader business context.
Pro-active in cross project and disease area learnings.
Ensure appropriate resourcing of the team.
Seek and apply best practices (internally and externally) in processes, data analysis, and decision-making in the project team.
Ensure that IP assets of the project are developed, managed and protected.
Ensure, together with functional leaders in and outside IMEDs, the project team is appropriately staffed, including exploration of externalisation opportunities; ensure resources from functions are managed effectively in the project team.
Ensure that there are robust processes, plans and data to enable Governance Bodies to make investment decisions and prioritise projects across the portfolio.
Create a vibrant, entrepreneurial and externally facing team focused on the delivery of successful PoCs that supports courageous leadership, innovation and collaboration, such that the Project team is open to challenge, new ideas, innovative ways of working, and where continuous learning and improvements are driven (development of talent).
Collaborate strongly with other IMED Project Leaders to embed best practice (collaboration & partnership).
Talent Management & Development
Provide high quality feedback and coaching to deployed reports and mentor key talent in the organization (development of talent).
Collaborate with VP Projects, Senior Project Leader and deployed functions to build outstanding project leadership within IMED.
Advanced degree in life sciences, MD and/or PhD or equivalent.
Mastery level of project management in a pharmaceutical clinical discovery/development environment.
Working with projects in a drug discovery and development setting.
Decision making and leadership in a cross-disciplinary/functional, cross-cultural environment.
Either science, clinical or drug development.
Awareness of scientific as well as commercial/payer, regulatory and broader strategic aspects.
Experience of working with the disease area.
Practical experience in working on teams in the discovery and development settings.
Proven leadership skills in managing projects.
Risk management and contingency planning.
