Primary Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Divisional Director/Senior Consultant, this position requires an articulate and focused Technical Director or experienced Principal Engineer seeking the next step in their career. With highly developed technical engineering, interpersonal and organisational skills you will be responsible for the technical and commercial delivery of highway structures solutions with an emphasis on offering a reliable and high-quality, client-focused service.
Responsibilities will include:
Leading the technical and commercial delivery of new highway structures solutions at feasibility, optioneering and detailed design stages
Management and preparation of bridge strengthening or modification designs at feasibility, optioneering and detailed design stages
Providing technical and managerial direction to other design engineers and technicians placed under your responsibility, including managing staff workloads, sourcing and disseminating work amongst the team
Programming structures inputs to multi-disciplinary schemes, including works and budget management of our fees and contractors’ works costs for our client bridge managers
Leading and managing the delivery and checking of inspection and assessment reports and bridge capacity assessment calculations
Preparation and checking of Technical Approval documents
Preparation and checking of contract documents and fee & works estimates for schemes.
Liaison with clients, stakeholders, specialist suppliers and contractors
Interfacing effectively with other Jacobs engineering disciplines
Monitoring and reporting progress against time and financial objectives
Compliance with Jacobs’ safety, quality and environmental policies, including promotion of our BeyondZero safety philosophy
Supporting recruitment, retention and talent management issues within the team
Supporting the professional development of staff through work and training activities, including mentoring junior members of staff by acting as a Supervising Civil Engineer (or equivalent)
Chartered Civil or Structural Engineers with significant post-professional qualification experience in a similar relevant role
Detailed knowledge and understanding of the conceptual and detailed design of a broad range of civil engineering structures, including bridges, underpasses, culverts and retaining walls, including associated approval procedures
Detailed knowledge of relevant design standards, the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCDHW) in relation to both new build and structural maintenance and refurbishment schemes
Ability to prepare proposals at the feasibility, pre-planning, planning and detailed design stages
Ability to plan, organise and manage resources, provide leadership, mentor and motivate a team of engineers and technicians
Ability to provide guidance on the use of design/analysis software (eg SAM, LUSAS, Midas, Superstress)
Ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects to deadline and budget
Experience of business development including Client liaison and preparation of bids
Excellent communication, client handling and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage project risk and monitor and review quality processes
A full clean driving licence
Experience of ECI or design and build projects
Experience of construction supervision
Good working knowledge of different contract types and procurement options
Project management qualification such as PRINCE2
Health and Safety training in the Bridges Sector
