Alternatives Product Specialist / Client Portfolio Manager

Position Summary:

Expert on assigned specialist product area(s) including private markets and hedge funds. Lead contact for assigned clients investing in multi-client funds or bespoke fund-of-one implementations. May have some limited portfolio management responsibilities for custom implementations.

Responsibilities:

Product Area Expert

  • Deep knowledge of Mercer’s multi-client funds and custom fund-of-one implementation capabilities across the full range of hedge fund and private market (private equity, infrastructure, real estate and private debt) manager-of-manager strategies Mercer offers;

  • Expert understanding of the industry dynamics of these assigned product area(s), including the different portfolio management approaches and competitive strategies amongst general partners and other underlying managers;

  • Identifies industry changes and evolution in assigned product area(s) and manages own approach to product area(s) accordingly;

  • Identifies changing attitudes and requirements of clients and evolution/migration into new product area(s); and

  • Perceived as an “expert” in a specialist area by other members of the business, ensuring this expertise is visible and hence views sought out by others.

  • Serves as a contact point for both internal colleagues / consultants and for external prospects and clients to answer questions, and support specific opportunities.

Client Service and Sale Support

  • Assists in the preparation of responses to client and tender queries relevant to the role, working with the client service and sales teams as well as the Alternatives portfolio management team, and develops investment information required for marketing material and Mercer's website

  • Proactively develops opportunities by partnering with field consulting teams and the Alternatives boutique to identify leads and meet sales goals for Mercer’s Alternatives solutions and advice.

  • Helps organize roadshows and other client/prospect visits to leverage planned travel by alternatives specialists throughout the growth markets region.

Other Activities

  • Able to explain dynamics of product area(s) and Mercer’s delegated capabilities to clients, consultants, and third parties;

  • Pro-actively identifies and manages value-added ad hoc projects;

  • Behaves in accordance with Mercer’s Core Values and Professional Standards

  • Ensures all relevant compliance processes are understood and followed where appropriate.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Educated to degree standard or similar.

Experience:

  • With ability to demonstrate competence and in depth knowledge in the Investment market

Knowledge and skills:

  • Experienced or advanced knowledge of:

  • Investment Knowledge: Market awareness, investment/risk tools, financial maths, accounting and economic, team structure,

  • Market Product Knowledge: Team structure, buy/sell knowledge, hierarchy, business strategy, liaison with managers, product knowledge, investment vehicles, research expert

  • Working Process: subjective information, internal IC knowledge/ratings, advice/liaison with colleagues and IT

Other requirements:

  • CFA/IMC

  • Travel requirements are expected to be approximately 1 week per month and may involve trips across the Growth Markets region.
