MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

The Technical Skills Trainer will lead on all technical training interventions for the Sourcing Unit and is necessarily an experienced multi-skilled Technician (normally Mechanical and Electrical disciplines) and these interventions will always focus on eradicating waste and loss.

You will be responsible for the delivery of routine training updates to Single and Multi-Skilled Craft Technicians and Technical Operators. Further, you will also project manage the Purfleet Development Groups, this involves leading the upskilling programmes and delivering the course training for trainee Technicians, Technical Operators and Apprentices in accordance with the requirements of local technical colleges and national curriculums. The Technical Skills Trainer will support Skills Assessments and Audits and local Continuous Improvement events.

Additionally you will provide advice and measuring for the recruitment of technical skills to the Sourcing Unit, as well as new starter inductions in the Operations and Engineering teams including upskilling into the role. The Technical Skills Trainer is responsible for the proper maintenance and standard of on-site training facilities and materials.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Teach, Coach, Mentor – An agile instructor able to range across the requirements of Teach, Coach and Mentor. An inspirational teaching approach is a guiding requirement for the role. Your principal teaching focus will lie with Apprentices, however the Technical Skills Trainer will support the revision of skills with trained Multi-Skilled Craft Technicians as well as instructing on emerging training modules.

  • Technical – Able to Teach, Coach and Mentor within the mechanical and Electrical domains:

Mechanical Skills include:

  • Maintenance and Condition Based Monitoring

  • Automation and Control

  • Machining and Fabrication

  • Machinery assembly, sub-assembly and component repairs

Electrical Skills include:

  • Remove and replace major electrical components (such as motors switch/control gear) and troubleshoot electrical circuits safely

  • Able to isolate machinery and re-install electrical supplies for machinery components

  • Establish power distribution systems and electrical control circuits

  • Install electrical drive systems and Control Loops

  • Electrical - Control instrumentation and sensor

  • Safety - Utilise appropriate safety and environmental procedures for people, processes, materials, products and equipment to ensure a safe working environment for the whole team. Ensure training is safe.

  • Environment – Ensure training supports the reduction of environmental impacts and costs associated with utilities, chemicals and product and operational wastes through maximizing eco-efficient operation.

  • Quality - Ensure that all Technical Staff within the Sourcing Unit receive the training opportunities to operate optimally.

  • Leadership – As a prominent Technical Leader promote the development of highly effective teams linking the importance of technical competence with wider leadership qualities and skills; communication, integrity, commitment etc. An ability to lead engineering improvement using excellent engineering knowledge and the application of logic.

  • Continuous Improvement – Conduct technical assessments of employee skills and through gap analysis and wider coaching techniques ensure employees’ technical skills meet factory priorities and support the eradication of losses.

  • Problem Solving – Able to develop employee skills in identifying, prioritising and addressing problems using the full range of tools and techniques that eliminate recurrence.

  • WCM - Knowledge and understanding of the key principles of WCM and its focus on Key Performance Indicators in the production area (PQSCDMI).

  • Business Awareness – Understands the need to meet changing demands and the role of marketing and product innovation in growing the business; is able to link this knowledge to employee training.

  • Project Management – Design, develop and launch the Purfleet Development Groups for progression from Machine Op to Tech Op and from Tech Op to Technician.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Post Apprenticeship Skill level in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (as graded by national standards)

  • National Teach, Coach, Mentor Qualification

  • School leaver qualifications in Reading and Comprehension, Writing and Mathematics

  • Core Engineering Skills – manufacturing experience using the two Engineering Disciplines required by the role; Mechanical; Electrical or Programme Logic Control

  • Experience of working as part of an extended team within the manufacturing sector

  • Strong coaching and communication skills

  • Proven analytical skills

Desirable:

  • Programme Logic Control qualifications.

  • Able to conduct software programme modifications and fault finding. Manage Programme Logic Control and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Networks (eg Programme modifications, Force Devices and fault finding)

  • Produce a Program for a PLC to Control a Specified Process supported by appropriate documentation

  • Experience of manufacturing in a Fast Moving Consumer Goods Company

  • Experience as a team member within a project Management team; awareness of project management tools/techniques.
