Cabot Corporation Sr. Technician Lab/QC in Wales, United Kingdom

The Cabot Barry site in the Vale of Glamorgan is currently looking to recruit 2 Laboratory Technicians. The successful candidate will have a knowledge of laboratory and quality systems and already have QA/QC laboratory or scientific experience. The role will include using a range of analytical techniques, carry out testing of fumed silica (process/ final product) and plant support testing whilst on shift, ensuring lab operations are conducted in accordance with the implemented schedule and prescribed standards. Executing other key operational duties within the lab: day-to-day this involves sampling, analysis of hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica, acids/utilities/ legionella, instrument calibration, product release, problem-solving, identify deviations from quality standards and taking appropriate action.


  • Takes responsibility, both individually and to the team performance by contributing to the following site performance metrics whilst on shift. Safety (no actions which lead to injury or significant near miss of self or others). Process Safety Management (no actions taken outside defined procedures which results in process safety events). Permit compliance (no actions taken outside defined procedures, which results in breach of operating license). Control of Non-Conforming Product (no actions taken outside defined procedures, which results in off-quality material

  • Take ownership for compliance with safe systems of work in the Laboratory and on site, including but not limited to COSHH, risk assessments, SOPs, application of our Guiding Principles.

  • Take ownership for performance of all routine analytical tests on fumed silica, inclusive of tests associated with legionella control/utilities testing (acid strengths, solids etc.) and to provide reliable, accurate data

  • Take ownership for keeping accurate records of work undertaken and making timely decisions with regards to results and reporting to minimise the impact on product quality and release.

  • Take ownership for calibration and operation of lab equipment as specified in CTMs (Cabot test methods) SOPs and WIs.

  • Take ownership of the efficient and accurate classification and release of product via use laboratory computer software (e.g. WinLIMS and JD Edwards) to include assistance with CoA generation as required

  • Take ownership for raising any Non-Conformance reports whilst on shift

  • Take ownership for laboratory housekeeping, safety auditing and monitoring stock levels

  • Take ownership for the storage and effective management of all laboratory retain samples

  • Take ownership for basic equipment troubleshooting and work order generation for repair within JDE

  • Ensure full compliance with UK legislative and site SH&E requirements (including incident reporting through Intelex, PJRA, behavioural based safety programmes).

  • Ensure full compliance with grade GCS requirements (e.g. testing schedule, result reporting, accuracy and precision)

  • Meet required accuracy and precision target for designated tests through the completion of Inter Lab Capability (ILC) analysis, Gage R&R studies, training and other company programmes

  • Support non-scheduled analysis (OOC events, complaints) as required by the Shift Manager, Snr Laboratory Technician or Q&E Specialist

  • Take responsibility for any other reasonable duties as required by the Shift Manager or Q&E Specialist


  • Proven numerical skills and IT literacy. Ability to operate a variety of laboratory instrumentation through standard PC and laboratory based computer software


  • Level 1 according to Barry competency directory


  • SH&E training matrix


  • HNC in scientific discipline.

  • QA/QC laboratory or scientific experience

  • Knowledge of laboratory systems –analysis, sampling, laboratory standards, calibrations and ISO9001, quality systems, GLP.
