What you'll be doing
You’ll be accountable for:
Single point of contact (SPOC): The legal advice in any SPOC area assigned to you from time to time.
The stakeholder relationship in your SPOC area and/or Line of Business.
Delivering your team goals (set each year) as well as any personal goals.
Developing and coaching other lawyers, graduates and paralegals whose work you supervise from time to time.
Give legal advice in all practice areas.
Build strong relationships with your individual stakeholders and the wider team’s stakeholders
Help to create simple processes, guidance and templates.
Support the Senior Employment Lawyers and Chief Counsel to deliver our strategy.
Deputise as needed.
This means you’ll give legal advice in the key practice areas (including):-
Employment Tribunals (ET’s): Run ET’s (including drafting, negotiating, settling and where needed advocacy).
Deals – Advise HR, Legal and the bid teams on TUPE, deals, procurement, M A, and exits; draft, review, and negotiate people clauses; represent BT during negotiations; flag risk during due diligence.Settlement Agreements (SA’s): Draft, review, negotiate and advise HR on SA’s (including Executive SA’s)
Case Management : Advise HR and Line Managers on grievances, investigations, disciplinary, performance and attendance cases (and any other case management queries).
Reward : Advise on all things related to employee reward, restrictions, T&C’s, working time, pay and benefits, including drafting contracts and policies.
Trade Unions & Employee Relations (ER): Advise on all things related to unions and ER, including collective bargaining, recognition and industrial action and employee representatives.
HR Change Projects: Advise on key projects (e.g. performance, attendance, etc.)
Business Change Projects: Advise on reorganisations, redundancy, T&Cs changes.
Other Projects: e.g. advice on regulatory or litigation investigations that need employment support.
Immigration : Advise on right to work, visas, and HR processes.
Stakeholders: Be responsible for the stakeholder relationships in your SPOC areas or Corporate Unit; help to build strong relationships with the team’s wider stakeholder population (HR Directors, Centres of Expertise, General Counsels and Finance).
Team Goals: Take action to deliver your team goals (set each year).
SPOC: You’ll act as SPOC for areas or topics assigned to you. You’ll undertake the work and delegate to the team
Be consistent and keep up to date, you’ll :-
Consistency: Use the standard systems, processes, guidance and templates available in each practice area (as well as improving them).
Horizon scan and keep your legal knowledge up to date; ensure stakeholders and colleagues are kept up to date, including designing and delivering training.
You’ll also contribute to BT developing great people by:-
Coaching, developing and supervising other people who do work for you.
Support Senior Lawyers and Chief Counsel deliver consistent performance management.
In the first 12 months you'll:
Get to know our stakeholders and our business.
Master the art of being an in-house lawyer.
Build your advocacy skills in the Employment Tribunal.

We'll also need to see these on your CV
A qualified solicitor with current practicing certificate in England Wales and/or Scotland
An experienced legal practitioner with a wide range of experience in private practice or in-house with around 3 years' post qualification experience as an employment specialist
Advocacy and employment tribunal experience desirable
Be able to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels in order to advise and shape BT’s employment law agenda.
