At AstraZeneca we win through science, it’s at the heart of our every success. That science is only possible when we all work together – we’ll always make sure you’re clear about how your role is connected to our wider mission to really show what science can do.

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within our Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) Biotech unit. The vision for Pharmaceutical Sciences is to deliver the therapies of the future through scientific leadership in drug delivery, design of synthetic routes and manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). Our portfolio of projects include traditional small molecules to nucleotide based therapies and nanomedicines across AstraZeneca’s therapy areas.

We’re looking for a highly talented and experienced pharmaceutical scientist with a proven record in project leadership and in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics, formulation, organic and physical chemistry, analysis and solid state sciences.

The Associate Principal Scientist (APS) will drive the technical and strategic interests of Pharmaceutical Sciences on a number of IMED project teams. Through a focus on the patient experience, an understanding of the disease state and the commercial setting, they will influence the design of candidate drugs that have the potential to become successful products. They will draw on their extensive understanding of product development, manufacturing, chemistry, drug delivery and emerging technologies to bring forward innovative new opportunities.

They will lead the Pharmaceutical Sciences activities, providing clarity of direction to colleagues, engaging effectively with stakeholders and scientific experts. They will develop and deliver scientifically valid, risk assessed, prioritised programmes to deliver the project needs. The projects will span a range of complexity, routes of administration and type of active agent, and may include collaborations with external companies or organisations, or scientific research programmes.

They will leverage the strong relationships they develop with colleagues across the IMED to ensure Pharmaceutical Sciences and the pharmaceutical sciences play a seamless, integrated role in the IMED projects. By driving innovation, helping to secure intellectual property, and contributing to presentations and publications you will develop your own profile and enhance AstraZeneca’s scientific reputation.

Together with line management and other scientific leaders, the APS will contribute to the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Sciences group, to change and improvement initiatives and to the development of junior members of the group.
