Reporting to the Head of Academic Services, the Learning Design Consultant will be responsible for leading the process of learning design for online and blended learning projects with higher education institutions. This includes supporting the whole design lifecycle from pre-contract scoping through to scaled delivery of online/blended programmes. Working collaboratively with faculty and Pearson colleagues to analyse instructional outcomes and provide expertise in the planning, development, and delivery of high-quality learning experiences. The Learning Design Consultant may also support the design and development of internal Pearson training and development.

Key Responsibilities

Stakeholder Management and Client communication

  • Lead the scoping, planning and implementation of learning design phase within appropriate Service offerings. Working with the Programme Delivery Manager to ensure appropriate scheduling and communication with client Universities.

  • Analyse client needs, instructional goals and objectives effectively to determine appropriate methods of learning design for both online and blended learning programmes

  • Ensure all plans for provision of course development service align with wider partnership commercial and strategic goals whilst ensuring a primary focus on achieving the best learning outcomes.

  • Establish mutually agreed Pearson and partner standards, guidelines and templates for course design ensuring all activity adheres to and maintains the highest quality.

  • Put in place appropriate governance and project management processes, escalating internal and academic partner issues to relevant stakeholders

  • Present course design solutions to both current and potential clients

  • Run workshops to demonstrate best practice in course design for both current and potential clients.

Instructional Design and Documentation

  • Analyse and apply trends in learning technologies and instructional design to support the delivery of a range of academic programmes. Including, development of learning objectives, structured learning activities and appropriate instructional and assessment processes.

  • Using creativity establish learning design models appropriate for the delivery of identified online/blended programmes; including detailed module design documentation based on agreed learning design methodology and course objectives

  • Design and develop curriculum, assessments and technical prototypes.

  • Create objective-based, engaging storyboards, course components and course templates that are aligned with instructional design best practices for the appropriate learner context

  • Identify approaches to enable the Evaluation of the effectiveness & quality of instruction through the use of qualitative, quantitative, formative, and summative methods.

  • Employ appropriate consultation techniques such as storyboarding, learner persona creation, effective documentation and evaluation reports.

  • Support institutional approval, accreditation, curriculum planning and development initiatives required to launch online/blended programmes

  • Be able to design, develop and review content in a range of off-the-shelf authoring tools (e.g. Articulate, Camtasia etc)

Research and Best Practice in Instructional Design

  • Lead and consult on all matters related to needs analysis, instructional design and delivery, assessment, and evaluation for the Higher Education Service Delivery business.

  • Research, implement, and lead emerging technology initiatives.

  • Keep up to date with leading research and emerging best practices in the instructional design community. Attend conferences and networks accordingly, publish papers and share research widely with rest of Pearson community.

  • Share effective practice in instructional design within Higher Education Service Delivery through staff development, mentoring and shadowing.

Leadership & Management

  • Build appropriate level of resource required, responsible for the recruitment, induction and training plans for all new Instructional Designer positions

  • Establish a strong network of trusted freelance instructional designers with a wide skill set to draw on.

  • Ensure quality, standards and schedules are maintained across all courses and instructional designers.

  • Responsible for overall delivery and project management of all courses on time on budget and to the highest quality.

  • Ensure all courses remain aligned to agreed brief, client needs and above all learner outcomes.

  • Coach and develop instructional designers, to include training and reviewing of all storyboards/content to ensure quality and consistency.

Production & Operations

  • Support the smooth transfer of identified instructional design plans to the content production team. Provide supporting documentation to enable Instructional Designers to manage content development and production.

  • Assist in briefing developers and designers

  • Assist with implementation, review, and revision of courses

Qualifications

Key Requirements

Essential:

  • Demonstrable experience designing and developing instructor led and self study, online/blended learning programmes within higher and/or professional education.

  • A Masters degree in Instructional Design, Learning, Technology and Instruction, or related field. Equivalent years of education and successful work experience in Instructional Design / Technology Enhanced Learning or another closely related field, with appropriate certification, will be considered.

  • Strong creative and design approach that leads to the innovative use of technology to support learning

  • Strong grasp of pedagogical and andragogical learning principles and other notable instructional design philosophies, strategies and theories, and the ability to apply those concepts to instructional content and development processes.Specific experience in designing authentic assessments and engaging course content

  • Ability to transform complex bodies of information into professionally designed, engaging and effective programmes.

  • Strong ability to work on multiple, complex projects within aggressive timeframes, to multi-task and continually prioritize changing project tasks / deliverables, and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent writing, communication, leadership & commercial acumen skills

  • Ability to articulate learning objectives that are practical, focused, concise and measurable.

  • Strong analytical, logic and problem –solving skills for analysing and identifying user needs, proposing solutions and logically organising complex information.

  • Experience of collaborating with teams and clients to deliver high quality learning experiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially written and oral communications skills, including being able to explain technical concepts in non-technical terms.

  • Knowledge and experience with academic Learning Management systems

  • Solid project planning and management skills.

  • Familiarity with relevant computer programs and course delivery platforms including proficiency in:

  • Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • flowchart mapping (e.g Lucid chart) and screen capture software (e.g. Camtasia) off-the-shelf authoring tools (e.g. Articulate)

  • writing for Virtual Learning Environments (e.g. Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas)
