Job location: Manchester

Cargill’s plant in Manchester is a production facility at the hub of the UK food, spirit, pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetics industries. The plant and offices located in Manchester are part of Cargill’s starches and sweeteners business which produces sweeteners, wheat protein and alcohol for customers in the confectionery, brewing, drink, dairy, farming and bakery sectors.

The Miller will ensure the safe and efficient operation of the process equipment in the flour mill, to ensure the maximum recovery of flour from wheat milling. The Miller will collaborate closely with the Head Miller and Wheat Area Production Manager to meet production targets.

  • To operate safely and efficient the milling equipment including but not limited to; adjusting roll stands, maintaining the sifter screens, carrying out break releases, adjusting cleaning equipment and ensuring maintenance of stock

  • To manage good housekeeping within the wheat milling process and ensure continued compliance to food safety standards

  • Supervision of contractor work in the milling process

  • Supporting plant shutdown and start up in the milling process

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in the process

  • To be proactive and hands on assisting the milling team with any additional duties required


  • 5 GSCE’s Grade A-C (including English, Math’s and Science) or equivalent, NVQ 2/3 in Processing Operations/ Food Manufacturing would be advantageous

  • Proven experience in production and experience from a similar industry e.g. chemicals, food/ingredients, wheat /starches processing would be a considerable advantage but not a requirement as training will be provided

  • Buhler Milling School Starch Milling Technology qualification would be advantageous but not required

  • Able to work safely at all times and ensure food quality standards, an IOSH qualification would be advantageous

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different levels in the organization

  • Fluent English (written and verbal)

  • Can manage conflicting priorities within tight deadlines and is organized

  • Basic IT skills

  • Willing to continually develop and learn professionally

  • Basic front line maintenance experience in a process plant environment
